Letter from Fr David Sherwood w/c 18 Jan

My dear friends

The readings for the Sunday just gone centre on vocation, in those readings the call of Samuel and the early disciples. When we think of vocation we think of the priesthood and the religious life. We think beyond that to obviously vocational occupations, such as nursing, medicine and increasingly teaching. Yet all Christians have a vocation to live out their lives as best they can to the greater glory of God. That means that God needs Christians in all occupations that are not morally repugnant, thus including tax inspectors but excluding sex workers.

On the subject of vocations S John Henry Newman wrote an inspiring passage beginning “God has created me to do Him some definite service.” It is quite a long quote but Google it and you should find the full quotation which I hope will inspire you.

We have to be careful how we seek to evangelise, for there is nothing worse than than the person who seeks to ram religion down your throat. That is why we run and hide when the Jehovah’s Witnesses call. Perhaps we need to ask them in and engage them in conversation to show them the error of their ways. That is not easy and we need to be well-informed in order to show where they are wrong.

If there are particular things on which you would like me to write please let me know and I will try to do so. My email is

With my love, Fr David

My dear friends If I asked “how are you?” your honest answer would probably be “I’m fed up.” We are restricted in what we can and cannot do. This is perfectly understandable but may I suggest a remedy

Letter from Fr David Sherwood

My dear friends A big thank you to the ten intrepid souls who remembered it was Sunday on 27th December and that it is our duty to be in church to praise God as they were. It was disappointing that we
